❄️ Speech Tip of the Month: “Winter Words on Repeat”
December is filled with fun seasonal words—perfect for language modeling! Try repeating functional winter words in short phrases during your daily routines to help them stick.
🧣 “Hat on!”
🎄 “Lights on!”
☕ “Hot! Careful.”
✨ Repetition with familiar phrases helps kids process, remember, and eventually try saying them back.
🐾 Ralphie’s Reminder
Ralphie’s favorite December routine? Helping unwrap gifts (even if they’re just empty boxes)! 🎁
Turn everyday unwrapping or surprise games into speech opportunities with phrases like:
🎁 “Open it!”
😲 “What’s inside?”
👏 “Wow!”
These predictable, high-interest moments are perfect for encouraging gestures, eye contact, and early words.
📚 Literacy Corner
🔤 Early Sprouts (PreK–K Pre-Literacy):
Winter Sound Sort
Pick 2 target sounds (like /s/ and /m/) and gather winter items or pictures (e.g., snow, sled, scarf, mittens, mug, marshmallow).
Sort them into sound piles and say each word slowly.
💬 “Mmm... mitten starts with /m/!”
📖 Reading Quest (1st Grade & Up):
Snowy Story Stretch
Pick a winter book or favorite short story, and ask:
❄️ “What would happen if it took place in a snowstorm?”
Let your child reimagine the story with a frosty twist. Great for flexible thinking and narrative skills.
📘 Word Wizards (Advanced Readers):
Winter Word Upgrade
Write a common winter sentence like: “The snow was cold.”
Challenge your child to improve it with juicier vocabulary:
➡ “The icy snowflakes stung my cheeks.”
Helps boost writing confidence and descriptive language!
🎨 Speechy + Simple: Activity of the Month
Hot Cocoa Helper ☕
Have your child help you make a warm drink (hot cocoa, warm milk, etc.)—it’s a routine packed with chances for communication!
Model words and phrases like:
🍫 “Stir it.”
🍼 “More milk.”
🔥 “Hot! Blow on it.”
✨ Speech Boost: For older kids, give directions using sequencing words like first, next, then, last. Ask them to retell the steps afterward.

📌 Quick Tip from Amy
This season can feel overwhelming—for you and your child.
So take the pressure off. Focus on shared moments, not perfect ones.
Even one connection-filled minute can spark a meaningful word.
💛 With heartfelt thanks for another year of growth, giggles, and first words.
Happy Holidays from our team to your family!
With gratitude,
Amy Mello, M.S., CCC-SLP
