🔤 Core Word: “MORE”
“More” is one of the most powerful early core words you can teach your child — and often one of the first they learn to use! It helps children express a strong want or need and encourages them to initiate and continue communication. It’s especially motivating because it gets results!
Here are 5 everyday ways to model “more”:
Snack Time – Pause during snack and wait. Say, “Want more?” or “More banana?” before giving another piece. Use the sign for more if your child uses baby signs.
Tickles or Hugs – Gently tickle or hug your child, then pause and say, “Want more?” Wait expectantly to see if they request more with a sound, gesture, or word.
Music & Songs – After finishing a favorite song or verse, pause and ask, “More wheels on the bus?” or “Want to sing more?”
Books – After closing a book, hold it up and say, “More book?” to see if your child initiates again. Repeat favorite parts to reinforce the concept.
Playtime – Whether it’s blocks, bubbles, or car races, use “more” each time your child wants to do it again: “More bubbles?” “More cars?”
The key is to pause and create space for your child to use “more” — then celebrate when they do!
📚 Book Recommendation: More More More, Said the Baby by Vera B. Williams
This sweet, diverse, and toddler-friendly book shows three babies having joyful moments with their grownups — and each one wants more love, more kisses, and more fun.
✅ Repetitive use of the word “more”
✅ Great for modeling early interaction and routines
✅ Rich with gestures, emotions, and connection
How to use it:
Point out each baby and say “More hugs!” or “More kisses!” as you read. You don’t need to read every word — talk about the pictures, point, and keep it playful!
🧸 Toy Recommendation: Bubble Machine or Bubble Wand Set
Bubbles are perfect for practicing “more” — and they’re a summer favorite!
-
Blow a few bubbles, then pause: “Want more?”
-
Let your child pop them, then model “More bubbles!” before blowing again
-
Combine signs and words for multisensory input
💡 Tip of the Month: Let Your Child Take the Lead
Following your child’s lead during play and daily routines is one of the most powerful ways to support language development. When you talk about what they are interested in — instead of directing all the action — you’re creating more meaningful language opportunities.
Try this:
-
Instead of saying, “Do you want this?” — wait to see what your child reaches for, then label it
-
If your child is playing with blocks, comment: “More blocks?” or “You want more?” instead of changing the activity
-
Let them pick the book or toy, then model language based on what they choose
This builds engagement, attention, and confidence — and gives you more chances to model words like “more” in context!
🐾 Ralphie’s Reminder
Every word you model counts — especially when your child is having fun!
This week, make “more” part of a fun routine your child loves. Whether it’s swinging, blowing bubbles, or reading their favorite book again, wait for that sparkle in their eye and give them a chance to say “more!”
🐶 Ralphie’s favorite? “More treats, please!” (He’s got that one mastered.)
