🍎 Simple Speech Tip: “New Season, Familiar Phrases”
As new routines begin, your child is taking in a lot—new people, places, and expectations. One of the best ways to support their communication? Consistency in how you speak.
Try this:
🗣 Use the same simple phrase each time a routine happens.
➡ “Shoes on, time to go!”
➡ “Coat, backpack, ready!”
➡ “Wash hands, then snack!”
✨ Why it helps: Predictable language supports processing, memory, and participation—and eventually, your child may start filling in the blanks!
🐾 Ralphie’s Reminder
New faces = new opportunities to grow social language!
This month, model simple social starters like:
👋 “Hi!”
😊 “My name is ___.”
🤝 “Wanna play?”
Use pretend play with toys, pets, or siblings to act these out and build confidence in low-pressure ways.
📚 Literacy Corner
🔤 Early Sprouts (PreK–K Pre-Literacy):
Letter Lunch
Choose a letter (like B) and go on a mini scavenger hunt around the house or during playtime.
📦 Look for things like book, ball, banana, blanket and say the name slowly together, emphasizing the first sound.
Great for sound awareness and vocabulary building.
📖 Reading Quest (1st Grade & Up Literacy Idea):
Character Feelings Tracker
While reading a story, pause and ask: “How do you think they feel right now?”
Help your child describe the emotion and the reason.
This supports empathy, inference, and expressive language—especially in new school-year social situations.
📘 Word Wizards (Advanced Readers):
Word Swap Rewrite
Choose a sentence from your child’s homework, book, or even a school flyer. Challenge them to rewrite it with more descriptive or powerful words.
📝 “I had a fun day.” → “I had an awesome adventure at recess!”
Boosts vocabulary, fluency, and flexible thinking.
🎨 Speechy + Simple: Activity of the Month
“Guess & Grab: School Edition”
Drop school-themed items (real objects or pictures/words on sticky notes) into a small bag or lunchbox—like glue stick, folder, pencil, marker, snack.
🎲 Take turns pulling one out (without showing it) and describe it so the other person can guess.
🗣 “It’s something you use to hold your paper. It has two pockets.”
Guess: “Folder!”
💬 After guessing, your child can say: “I put my math paper in the folder.”
✨ Articulation tweak: Choose words that feature your child’s target sounds (e.g., /s/ = snack, scissors, school, seat, sandwich) for added speech practice in a fun way.

📌 Quick Tip from Amy
It’s okay if your child is more tired, clingy, or quiet right now—new routines take energy.
Instead of pushing for more words, slow down, narrate what you see, and offer connection.
💬 “You look tired. I bet your day was busy. Let’s sit and read together.”
Here’s to small moments with big impact.
With care,
Amy Mello, M.S., CCC-SLP
